Here I will be posting assignments for the week and also giving a synopsis of what is going on. For week one we will be discussing the student handbook and the county handbook. Along with going over the handbooks we will conduct team building exercises and some getting to know each other activities. I'll be sharing my expectations for the classroom and repeatedly going over the procedures of the classroom. This will be a great and fun year. I can feel it.

5/15 to 5/19 - This week we will work on the different waves of immigration into the United States. We will utilize "Faces of America" a PBS program that looks at the past of current public figures and finds out about their immigrant ancestors. We will look at the causes for people to move here to the United States. We will then wrap it up my looking at Ellis Island in New York and the importance of it. We should be done by Wednesday and then we will start our next mini unit on Civil Rights.
5/8 to 5/12 - This week will be a weird week. We will be ending our economics unit working on the different online tools that will guide us through the terms and simulation of personal finance. We will begin a mini unit on immigration starting on Wednesday. Gaining different perspectives and understanding about the policies and circumstances that promote and detract from people moving to another country. We will look at the processes for people to come into the U.S. and more. I'll be gone on Friday to drive for the other team as they go on their field trip.
5/1 to 5/5 - This week we will have a bench mark on Tuesday. This week we will be finishing our coverage on personal finance. We will look at a video about personal called "My Life My Money". The video instills in young people the benefits of being financially smart and informs them of the possible perils of not being financially irresponsible. We will have our Economic Vocab Quiz on Wednesday. Students should be looking at their vocab nightly to be ready for the quiz.
4/24 to 4/28 - Welcome back everybody. I hope everyone had a nice and refreshing break. We are now in the short rows. Not that much longer to go till we are out for summer. This week we are going to be covering financial literacy. We will be using a website called Gen I that is created by the Council of Economic Education. Students will be learning about loans to stocks. Along the way I will give them vocab and we will have a quiz next week. I will post the vocab later in the week.
4/10 to 4/13 - This week will be a short week. This week the students will be working on a project. The project will have the students look at a particular amendment and how it relates to today's world. The information on how to do it is posted on their google class and a rubric on how they will be graded. Due on Thursday the 13th.
4/3 to 4/7 - This week we are going over more in depth about the branches of government. We will also look at the checks and balances of the three branches. We will have a quiz on 4/5. Towards the end of the week we will explore the bill of rights and begin work on a project about the bill of rights.
3/27 to 3/24 - This week we will look at the 3 different branches of government. We will have participate in a mock supreme court case. We will examine the powers of the congress and legislative branch. We will have a mini quiz on the Articles of the Constitution on Monday and a Vocabulary Quiz on Friday. We will be using icivics and Constitution USA a program by PBS that looks into how the constitution impacts our daily lives.
3/20 to 3/24 - This week we will be looking at Parts of the Constitution. We will examine all the articles and what each one does. We will have a quiz on them on Thursday. After the Articles we will look at what the branches of the Federal government and look at what they can and can't do We be using Icivics and google classroom to continue investigate and research these topics.
3/13 to 3/17 - This week will be a busy week. Wednesday Mrs. Hall is coming to do high school registration. Students need to pick 3 electives and 3 alternate classes for next year. Please don't come unprepared !!!!! We will have a vocab quiz on Thursday. For the remainder of the week we will begin to look at how our system of government works. How our government became to be. We will use google classroom and Icivics a website by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor
3/6 to 2/10- This week we will be finishing up the Revolution. Students have been working on projects from last week. We will be done by Wednesday. Students are encouraged to work on projects at home if they have not finished in class. We will begin our introduction into government on Thursday. I will give them a Vocabulary list. We will have a quiz on it next week on Thursday next week. We will see what students know about government and the history of our government.
2/27 to 3/3 - I hope everyone is doing well. I was out 3 days last week due to the flu. Please, if you are feeling ill do not come to school. This has been the worst I've seen the flu season since I've been teaching. This week we will finish our coverage of the events leading up to the revolution. Students will begin to use the information gathered from last week to use in creating evidences for a argumentative paper. We will begin hopefully by the end of the week our look into the Constitution and our development of our government.
2/21 to 2/23 - This week we will examine the involvement of the Carolina colony in the American Revolution. The colony contributed the Halifax and Mecklenburg Resolves. We will investigate the significance of the Declaration of Independence. We will also look at the first skirmishes of Revolution such as Lexington and Concordl. The students were given a sheet of battles of the American Revolution where they are to find the significance of the battles and other information. We will cover over them as well.
2/13 to 2/17 - This week will be a bit of a wacky week. Monday I'm planning to cover the Boston Massacre. We will look at 3 different perspectives of the event itself in class. Students will have awards day on Tuesday then have Principal's pride on Wednesday. Students will be going to Rollerland on Wednesday so if they have Principal's pride they need to turn in their permission slips as soon a possible. Our papers will be due on Wednesday. Students must submit their papers through my google classroom. On Thursday we will discuss the Quartering Act and the lead up of the Declaration of Independence.
2/6 to the 2/10 - This week we will be having bench marks in Math on Tuesday. We will have a our Vocab Quiz on Friday the 10th. Students are encouraged to review their vocab words every night. Students are going to working on a 6 paragraph paper on the stance of the British were right. It is a persuasive essay in which they can agree or disagree on the statement. The students are required to brainstorm reasons and evidence before writing the actual paper. They may use a bubble map or plus delta chart to get their thoughts on paper. Students will be given a rubric to look at to make sure they are in compliance with what is being asked of them. Students need to have reasons for their stance backed by evidence. They will be getting their evidence based on two events: the Proclamation of 1763 and the Sugar Act. I will also up load the rubric below. Students will work on this in class but are also encouraged to work on at home.
1/31 to 2/3 - This week we will begin to look at the causes of the American Revolution. I will give the students a study guide and also vocab terms on Causes of the American Revolution. Both the vocab and study guide will be posted below. We will have a quiz on the vocab next week and the following week we will have a test on the causes of the Revolution. I will let you know when the quiz and test will be at a later date. This week we will be looking at the Proclamation of 1763, Sugar Act, Currency Act, and the Quartering Act.
1/23 to 1/27 - This week we will have ELA bench marks on Tuesday. We finish covering the Regulator Movement and the Battle of Alamance. We will also talk about the Causes of the Revolution. We will talk about the need for England to raise taxes on the colonists and the resistance of the colonists to pay them. We will look at civil disobedience as a concept and how it has been used as a force for change not just in the lead up to the American Revolution but through out American history.
1/17 to 1/20 - This week we will have our quiz on our Vocabulary on Wednesday. We will review on Tuesday. This week we will also look at the growing divide between the people living in the back country of the North Carolina colony and the east. We will look at the establishment of the William Tryon as the royal governor. We will use different forms of media and computer apps to help illustrate the struggle of the Regulator Movement and how it will add to the fuel that will start the fire of revolution.
1/9 to 1/13 - I hope that everyone was safe and warm over the weekend. This week we will look into the split of the Carolina colony. We will examine the establishment of the Granville District. We will have new vocabulary this week as well. I will post it up here for students to be able to download. We will have some assignments this week which will be located on google classroom. We will have a vocabulary quiz at the beginning of next week. It will be next Wednesday 1/18.
1/3 to 1/6 - I hope everyone had a nice break. After we have looked at the different groups that settled in the colonies we will look at the growing struggle between colonists and England. We will examine Culpepper's rebellion. Students will answer question of the significance of the event. We will also look at Golden Age of piracy and the infamous Blackbeard the Pirate. Students will perform a webquest.
12/12 to 12/16 - This week the students will be working on a project in class. The students will have a choice between picking a group, event, or idea about early colonization. They will work in a group no larger than three. We will work on this till Thursday. We will present on Friday. I will include t
12/5 to 12/9 - This week we will continue to look at the establishment of the Carolina colony. We will also look at different groups that would move here. Remember there is a chorus concert on Tuesday night. We will also have Principal's Pride on Wednesday. We will take a look at Birth of a Colony which is about the colonization of North Carolina. Students will use their google classroom accounts to work together and answer questions about early colonization.

11/28 to 12/02 - I hope everyone had a good Turkey Day. This week we will have our vocab quiz on Friday the 2nd. I will upload the vocabulary below. This week we will further examine early European Settlement by looking at different groups that come in and the reasons behind their movement. We will also examine the beginnings of the slave trade. Students will work on questions individually and in groups that will provoke thought about the subjects we will cover.
11/21 to 11/23 - This week there will be no quiz. Monday we have awards day. Tuesday there is a science bench mark. Wednesday is a half day and there is going to be a presentation by the high school about the Avid program. We will concentrate on the quiz once we get back from Thanksgiving break. This week we will review information on settlement of the US and NC. We will look at the historical significance of the upcoming holiday. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. 11/14 to 11/15 - This week we are going to finish our discussion and investigation into the establishment of Jamestown. This week we look at the concept of immigration. We will see what we know and questions we might have. We will see what brought the Europeans to the New World. What was the affect of the Europeans on the Native tribes once they arrived. We will use google classroom and also the websites that I recommended for research. I will upload the website recommendations and the new vocabulary list. We will have a Vocab quiz next week.
11/7 to 11/10 - This week will be a short week . Last Friday we started an assignment on your google classroom where the students will investigate the beginnings and hardships of the people of Jamestown. Jamestown was the first successful English settlement in the New World. Tuesday we will be having our Math bench marks. Thursday is half a day. We will be having Military appreciation on Thursday morning. We will not have school on Friday.
10/31 to 11/4 - This week we are finishing up our coverage of the Lost Colony and early exploration. We will have our quiz on the Lost Colony on Thursday. Monday of course is Halloween and our dance at school. Tuesday, Mrs. Hall is coming by to talk about classes at the high school and how to register. We will begin to talk about the beginnings of the international slave trade and further settlement on Thursday and Friday as well.
10/24 to 10/28 This week is going to be an eventful week. We will have bench marks for ELA on Tuesday. We also have two home football games. On Monday we will play Tucker Creek and then Pumpkin bowl against H.J. McDonald on Wednesday. Please come out and support both our A and B football teams. The B team plays at 5 and the A team plays at 6.
This week we will begin our look at Exploration. We will talk about the first attempt by England to colonize the New World. We will examine the mysterious case of The Lost Colony. We will use a new app for creating our graphic organizers. I believe it is easier to use than our last app and incorporates well with our google docs. We will use this and other graphic organizers to examine the reasoning for exploration and its impact on North Carolina and the United States as a whole. We will have a quiz on the material toward the end of the week or possibly the beginning of next week. I will keep you posted.

10/17 to 10/21 I hope that everyone is well and that damage was minimal from the hurricane. I did want to alert you to a Disaster Relief Drive that we are doing for flood victims in our area. Please contribute if you can. This week we will have a test on Friday for our Unit on Native Americans. We will discuss and investigate also the tragedy of the Trail of Tears in the beginning of the week. We will review information on Thursday via our first ever Jeopardy game. Our Test will be this Friday. Notes and slides of the content will be available on the downloads and resources pages.
10/3 to 10/7 - This week will be a short week. We have a half day on Friday. Also, please watch the news about any storm warnings and be prepared. This week we are exploring Native American culture. We are creating mind maps to help visualize the information and use that for a further project. I'll share a link to the app so that you can check how it works. We will spend some time working on another project that I'll post about it later in the week.

9/26 to 9/30 - This week we will be examining Native Americans and their culture and impact on North Carolina and the US. I have given out a Native American vocabulary sheet. I will post it below and in the downloads section of the website. Earlier in the week we will establish what we think we know about Native culture then examine native culture before European contact and to the present. We will use different methods of investigating and researching the topic. We will have a Vocab Quiz on Thursday 9/29.
9/19 - 9/23 - This week students will be working on projects dealing with North Carolina. I gave students access to Google Classroom where the project format and rubric are. They will be working on these projects till Wednesday. We will have our first test on Friday on North Carolina Geography. I will hand out a study guide to the class on Monday. I will post up the details of the project, rubric and study guide below. Students should be studying or working on their projects for homework.
9/12 to 9/16 - This week we will be continuing our coverage of the great state of North Carolina. We will look at the different regions of NC and the people. On Tuesday we will have our Vocabulary Quiz. We will also be starting a project on our state starting Wednesday or Thursday depending on the timing of our coverage of our state material. I will put up the directions later on in the week. Progress reports will go out this Wednesday also.
9/6 to 9/9 - This week we will explore geography of our state and country. We will construct maps and discuss our location within this world that we live in. I have given the students a Vocabulary List. I'll will post it below and we will have a quiz on 9/13. Students need to study for this test.
